Maruti-Suzuki Ignis Vs Hyundai Elite i20 Comparison Review
Hyundai Elite i20 Vs Maruti Suzuki Ignis:

Pricing &
Features:
The Ignis is the newly
launched compact hatchback by Maruti-Suzuki. It looks very redefined and young. The
Ignis is offered in both 1.2L petrol and 1.3L diesel engines and both has
Automatic and Manual transmissions.
On the other hand, we
have the Hyundai Elite i20 which is quite familiar to Indian eyes. It is found
to be one of the best rivals for Ignis. The engine capacity of the petrol
engine is 1.2L and the CRDi diesel engine capacitates 1.4L. Unlike Ignis, the Elite
i20 does not offer Automatic transmission for the diesel engines.
Price:
Petrol:
The Ignis Alpha is the
top end variant of Ignis. It is powered by the 1.2L VVT petrol engine and is
retailed at an ex-showroom price of 6.69lakhs. This is almost 55,000 rupees
cheaper than the top end variant of Elite i20.
The Elite i20 Asta is
also powered by 1.2L VTVT petrol engine, costs 7.25lakhs. Hyundai has offered
some features in the i20 that makes the price difference sensible.
Diesel:
Ignis 1.3 Alpha costs
around 7.8lakhs. It is the usual Fiat Multijet Turbocharged engine. This is
roughly 60,000 rupees cheaper than the Elite i20. The top end price of the
diesel i20 costs 8.48 lakhs. Under the hood, it has the 1.4L CRDi engine, that
is way more powerful than that of Ignis'.
Price of other
variants:
Ignis 1.2 Zeta Petrol:
5.75 lakhs.
Ignis 1.3 Zeta Diesel:
6.91 lakhs.
Elite i20 Sportz (1.2
Petrol): 6.72 lakhs
Elite i20 Sportz (1.4
CRDi): 7.98 lakhs
Common Features:
Both Ignis and the i20
are loaded with quite a number of features. A few common features are ABS,
start stop button, ORVM Indicators, dual airbags, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic climate control, etc.
Extra features in
Ignis 1.2 Alpha: Touch screen infotainment system, Voice control, Electrically
adjustable outside rear view mirrors and rear reading lamp.
Extra features in
Elite i20 1.2 Asta: CD Player, Rear AC vents, Glove box cooling, leather
steering wheel and rear spolier.
Performance and
Drivability:
Petrol:
The petrol variants of
both the cars are very smooth and calm. Surprisingly, both the cars churns out
the same 83bhp@6000 rpm and 114Nm torque. But we can experience quick response
and handling in the Ignis due to its light weight. The body roll is very
obvious in the Ignis as it has a higher ground clearance than the Elite 20, but
the engine revs and driving experience is very peppy and punchy in city
traffic. Both the cars are capable of making triple digit speeds in the
highways with pleasing stability.
Diesel:
As far as diesel is
concerned, the Elite i20 scores a lot in terms of performance. This is because
of the 1.4L CRDi engine which puts out 88bhp whereas the 1.2L Ignis makes only
74bhp. The torque is also greater than the Ignis even at lower rpms. The Diesel
Elite i20 has a 6-speed manual gearbox which can take you upto 180kmph with
ease. There is a minimal turbo lag in both the cars but does not affect the
overall drivability.

Maximum Power: Elite i20 - 88.73bhp@4000rpm ; Ignis - 74 bhp@4000rpm

Kerb Weight: Elite i20 - 1515kg ; Ignis - 835kg
Fuel Efficiency:
Be it petrol or
diesel, Ignis has the higher fuel efficiency of both the cars.
Elite i20 (Asta
1.2) has a mileage ranging between 13.3kmpl and 18.6kmpl while Ignis (1.3
Alpha) offers a fuel efficiency of 22.8 - 26.8kmpl.

Elite i20 (Manual

Elite i20 MT: City-

It is clear to note
that Ignis offers better mileage and is also pocket friendly than the Elite i20
in the case of both petrol and diesel engines.
Space & Comfort:
Suzuki has dedicated a
lot to satisfy the customers’ needs of comfort and space. Ignis has enough leg
room in the front and the rear row. The head room is immense when compared to
the i20, due to its height. The Elite i20 has a better leg room than the Ignis
as it has a greater wheel base. The ground clearance of Ignis being 180mm which
is 10mm greater than the i20, results in a bit of body roll. The boot space is
pretty large enough in both the vehicles, though i20’s boot is 35 litres more
than that of Ignis’.

Width (mm): Ignis - 180 , Elite i20 - 170
Height (mm): Ignis

Ride Quality & Handling:
When it comes to handling, the i20
pushes down the Ignis. Ignis being lighter than the rival, makes handling a
fear factor at high speeds. The i20 provides a
confident handling to the driver and hence make the ride quality peaceful to
the passengers as well. The suspension of Ignis is soft and well equipped and
handles bad roads with ease. But due to the larger wheel base and the lower
ground clearance, the Elite i20 wins the ride quality term.

Ground Clearance (mm): Ignis - 180 , Elite
i20 - 170

Reliability and After Sales Service:
Needless to say, Maruti has the best reliability and a strong reputation in the country and provides a wide range of service centers. Hyundai has also been trying to improve its Service Support in the country. There is no massive difference in the maintenance charges of the two cars. However, Hyundai can never replace Maruti in terms of customer satisfaction, reliability, low maintenance charges and service network.
Resale & Cost of
Ownership:
The Elite i20 can be
bought in the used cars market for 5.8 to 7 lakhs. This makes a very good deal
for the sellers who wish to sell their vehicles after a nominal use of 3-4
years. Ignis on the other hand, being a Maruti make will have an equal pay as that
of the Swift. Ignis can be sold for atleast 4 lakhs.

Verdict:
The Ignis and the Elite i20 are good competitors to each
other and deciding the winner is quite a task. Both the cars have got their own
pros and cons. But the Elite i20 stands fit in many parameters. It has got a
good looking shape, a powerful diesel engine and refined driving experience and
comfort. This does not make the Ignis a bad choice. i20, though being more expensive,
does not have the ‘touch screen’ infotainment system which the Ignis possesses.
However, in an overall view, the verdict is in favour of Elite i20.
