Performance & Drivability Comparison:
Petrol:
Verna seems more powerful than the Rapid on paper, but in reality, there's hardly any difference in their on road performance. Low end torque is on the weaker side and both engines need to be revved hard to extract any semblance of performance from them. Refinement is to notch and difference is only apparent in the to end of the rev range where the Verna has a clear advantage over the Rapid.

Kerb Weight (kg): Verna - 1090, Rapid – 1137
Diesel:
Among the diesels, the Verna again likes far superior on the spec sheet, but in reality suffers from massive turbo lag. City driving becomes a nuisance due to the constants gearshifts that are required to keep the turbo spinning along. The Rapid on the other hand has excellent drivability right from 1500 rpm onwards, but it's refinement remains a shade lower than the Verna.

Kerb Weight (kg): Verna - 1190, Rapid – 1210
Handling & Ride Quality Comparison:
The Verna is no match to the Rapid when it comes to driving dynamics. The Rapid has a typical European underpinnings, characterized by well controlled body roll, excellent mechanical grip and rock solid stability on the highways. Even the steering is noticeably well-weighted, while the ride is a little firm at low speeds but improves as the speeds rise. Verna on the other is too softly sprung, making it jittery while going over a series of bumps and its excessively light, lifeless steering failing to instill any confidence at highway speeds.

Rapid: 185/60R15
Space & Comfort Comparison:
Both cars are more or less identical in terms of cabin space. Verna scores a couple of brownie points over the Rapid for better knee-room and leg-room at the rear. The Rapid fights back with firm cushioning and superior ergonomics, making it relatively more fatigue-free on the longer drives. Both cars have superbly crafted interiors, with top-notch materials and outstanding fit-finish.

Reliability & After Sales Service Comparison:
Skoda India has made a total mess of its service operations in our country. It is sad to see a brand like Skoda which regularly tops quality surveys like JD Power in Europe, languish at the bottom of the heap in India, all thanks to good-for-nothing, old timers that were given the responsibility of setting up professional service operations in the country, but who chose the dealers who would give them the most kickbacks instead. In stark contrast, the Koreans have maintained a vice-like grip over their dealers for the past two decades and continue to obsessively micromanage the service network, resulting in one of the most trusted automotive brands in the country for customer service, second only to Maruti.
Resale & Cost of Ownership Comparison:
This particular generation of Verna, has reached the fag end of its life-cycle, soon to be replaced by a thoroughly refreshed model in a matter of months. The Rapid on the other hand is brand-spanking-new. This is bound to negate Hyundai's reliability and after sales service advantage over the Rapid to an extent that both will fetch similar asking price in the used car market after a usage of 5 to 7 years.

Overall, both cars work out to be roughly similar in terms of overall ownership cost. However, even a few unscheduled visits to the service centre can push the ownership costs of Skoda to a much higher level than the Hyundai.
