The Alto 800 'LXi' petrol, has been its most popular variant, in the country by far. It costs 3.35 lakh Rs. while the CNG variant costs 4 Lakh Rs.on road, Delhi. Redi Go’s 'T' variant costs 3.40 Lakh Rs. which is just 5,000 Rs. more expensive than the Alto 800 petrol and 60,000 Rs cheaper than the Alto 800 CNG. The Redi Go 'T' has an extra Mobile Docking Station and audio system over the Alto LXi, while the Alto has extra Front Power Windows over the equivalent Redi Go.

Performance & Drivability:
The Redi Go has substantially better performance than the Alto 800. It is a mind-blowing 30% more powerful and 20% more torquey than the Alto 800 in terms of power & torque to weight ratios. This, right here is called real progress. Entry level car buyers no longer have to suffer through yawn-inducing performance. When asked, the Redi Go is even capable of delivering a sub 16-second 0-100 dash. The Alto fights back with better refinement over the Redi Go, although it is not at all enough to make up for its dull performance. Fuel Efficiency:
The Redi Go has an ARAI certified mileage of 25.17 kmpl, which is 0.5 kmpl more than the Alto 800's fuel efficiency of 24.7 kmpl. In our back-to-back tests, the Alto 800 just as efficient as the Redi Go. The Alto CNG has an ARAI certified mileage of 32.26 km/kg. In our back-to-back tests it covered 22.5 kms on a kilogram of CNG, however it also consumed petrol for startup etc. to the tune of 1 litre for every 150 kilometers on an average. This makes the Alto CNG almost a Lakh rupees cheaper than the petrol Alto 800 & Redi Go over a usage of 75,000 km.

Space & Comfort:
The Redi Go is a far more spacious and comfortable vehicle than the Alto 800, in spite of being identical in length. Tall-boy design is a must for entry-level hatches, to liberate adequate room inside the cabin, an opportunity, which Suzuki lost decades ago, when they designed the Alto's chassis, and now, there's nothing they can do about it. The Redi Go has higher seating position than the Alto, which works like a charm. It liberates some, much needed inches of leg-room and head-room, as well as enhances ingress-egress and under thigh support, of the seats. Redi Go's rear seat is also a bit wider, than the strictly two seater version of the Alto. The Redi Go also has a bigger 222 litre boot-space, which is a handy 45 litres more than the Alto. Those thinking about the CNG version, do not forget that it does not have any boot capacity at all.

Ride Quality & Handling:
Renault-Nissan has done a fantastic job with the Redi Go's dynamics. It rides reasonably well over broken tarmac reminding you of cars from a segment above it. Even the Alto 800 has decent ride quality but needs to be driven very carefully over broken roads compared to the Redi Go. Alto's lower centre of gravity gives it lesser body roll than the Redi Go around the corners, but the Redi Go itself is quite eager around the bends. If only the Redi Go had better steering, it's poor returnability and excessive assistance makes it even worse to pilot than Alto's already over-assisted unit.

Reliability and After Sales Service:
One parameter where Datsun has a long long way to go before it catches up to Suzuki is in terms of product reliability and service support. Firstly, Alto's dependable nature has been one of the main reasons for it astounding success in our country. It is best to adopt a wait-and-watch policy for first six months to ascertain Redi Go's reliability. Secondly, Maruti's established service network has well trained staff and has made a name for itself at delivering a hassle free service experience. Last but not the least, Maruti's sheer service reach with its 2000+ dealerships is far wider than what Datsun's 200 odd outlets can provide.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh):
The Alto is bound to hold slightly better residual value than the Redi Go, thanks to Maruti's years of hard work put into establishing a stellar reputation of quality.

We are well aware that there is a segment of buyers, who need to save every last rupee of expenditure on the purchase and upkeep of their vehicle and for them the Alto CNG is the clear-cut choice. But for those who are looking a more well rounded product, the Redi Go offers more spacious and comfortable interiors, refreshing performance and similar features as the Alto for almost no extra cost, making it unmistakably better value for money than the Alto. Redi Go fits the bill perfectly for those who don't want their first car, to be the same as their Dad's first car, and thus is our winner of this shootout.
