New Grand i10 2017 Facelift vs Ignis Comparison

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift Comparison Review

"One simply cannot choose a car of these two as both these cars are equally featured and fits into sub 8-lakh budget. The impression of the exterior looks is upto the customer's wish. But technically, the face-lifted Grand i10 dominates the Ignis"

Pricing and Features:
Hyundai has recently launched the facelift of the previous Grand i10. The facelift model looks very fresh and crisp. A lot of new features have been fed to the new Grand i10.  It comes with the new and more powerful 1.2L diesel engine instead of the older 1.1L version. The petrol trim continues the same 1.1L Kappa petrol engine. Here, we will be reviewing the petrol version as it seems to be more powerful and punchy than the diesel mill. The rival is obviously, Maruti Suzuki's newcomer, the Ignis.

We are getting a bit familiar with the prices of the Ignis. The top of the line Ignis Alpha costs 7.6 lakhs (on road Delhi). It is powered by the 1.2L petrol engine making 83bhp power and 113Nm of torque.
The Hyundai Grand i10, on the other hand, puts a price tag of 7.1 lakhs for the 1.2 Kappa Asta variant which is a half-lakh rupees cheaper than the Ignis. This is one variant below the top end variant and is a more appropriate rival to the considered Ignis' variant.

Prices of other variants:
Petrol:
Ignis Zeta: 6.4 lakhs
Ignis Zeta AMT: 7.2 lakhs

Grand i10 Sportz (O): 7.6lakhs
Grand i10 Magna AT: 6.5 lakhs

Diesel:
Ignis 1.3L Alpha: 9 lakhs
Ignis 1.3L Zeta AMT: 8.4 lakhs
Ignis 1.3L Zeta: 8 lakhs

Grand i10 1.2L Asta: 8.3 lakhs
Grand i10 1.2L Sportz (O): 7.8 lakhs
Grand i10 1.2L Sportz: 7.4 lakhs

Common features in the Grand i10 and Ignis:
Both the cars get driver and passenger airbags, ABS, touch screen infotainment system, automatic climate control, Engine Start/Stop button, Voice control, multi functioning steering wheel, OVRM turn indicators and other basic features.

Extra features in the Grand i10:
CD Player, front speakers, roof rail, rear spoiler, leather steering, glove box cooling and rear A/C vents.

Extra features in the Ignis:
EBD, Rear fog lamps and Anti-Theft alarm.

Performance & Drivability:
As both the cars have the same 1.2L petrol engine making the same amount of power and torque, differentiating between their performance is quite a task. Both the cars offer a peppy and fun-to-drive feel in the city due to their compact size. It feels almost the same when it comes to acceleration and engine response. They share the same 5-speed manual transmission system. The gearshifts are smooth and accurate, thus delivering optimum performance.
Be it a city roam or a highway cruise, both the cars are sure to offer satisfying pleasure. The petrol engine runs quiet and lets you drive enthusiastically.

However, the Grand i10 and the Ignis are not the cars to be judged based on their performance.

Engine Displacement (cc): Grand i10 - 1197 ; Ignis - 1197

Maximum Power: Grand i10 - 83bhp ; Ignis - 83bhp

Maximum Torque: Grand i10 - 114Nm @4000rpm ; Ignis - 113Nm @4200rpm

Fuel efficiency:
The Grand i10 and the Ignis, both having the same 1.2L petrol engine offer almost equal mileage. They don't make a huge difference in this segment. This case is the same for the diesel trims too. But to be very accurate, Ignis offers a higher mileage than the Grand i10. The overall mileage of the Ignis ranges between 16.9 - 20.9 kmpl while Grand i10 offers a fuel efficiency of 16 - 19 kmpl.

Grand i10: City - 16 ; Highway - 19

Ignis: 2.5 lakhs

Ignis: City - 24.8 ; Highway - 26.8

Fuel Cost for 75,000 kms est.:
Grand i10: 1.8 lakhs
Ignis: 1.6 lakhs

Space & Comfort:
Speaking about space, there's no big difference between the two. Both the cars possess almost the same amount of space at the rear. The Ignis, being a tall car, offers better headroom  than the Grand i10. There is enough and comfortable legroom and support in both the cars. However, there is no compromise with the boot space though. There is a plenty of space at the boot that lets you stuff some fair amount of luggage. the rear passengers in the Grand i10 might feel more comfortable and chilled because of the Rear A/C vents. The dual tone finish at some parts of the interior in the Ignis looks beautiful.

On the whole, the Ignis and the Grand i10 are sure to offer good space and carry 5 persons comfortably.

Length (mm): Grand i10: 3765 ; Ignis - 3700

Width (mm): Grand i10 - 1660 ; Ignis - 1690

Height (mm): Grand i10 - 1520 ; Ignis - 1595

Ride Quality & Handling:
Compact cars always fun to drive. The same law applies here. The Grand i10 and the Ignis are very responsive and easy to drive in the traffic and highways. The Ignis doesn't actually give the feeling of driving a small car, but it just glides through the gaps in moving traffic. The Ignis' steering is a bit disappointing than the Grand i10's. When making an U-turn, the steering sometimes doesn't come back to the center and you'll have to manually do it. This is not very disturbing but when comparing, everything counts. On the other hand, handling the Grand i10 feels very peppy. It makes us feel really into the car. The AMT versions of these cars also perform equally good.

Wheelbase (mm): Grand i10 - 2425 ; Ignis - 2435

Ground Clearance (mm): Grand i10 - 165 ; Ignis - 180

Tyre Size: Grand i10 - 165/65 R14 ; Ignis - 175/65 R15

Reliability & After Sales Service:
Doubtlessly, Maruti Suzuki is definitely more reliable than Hyundai. Maruti has got a place in the hearts of Indians and is very consistent about the reliability since years. One can confidently buy any Maruti Suzuki and need not worry about the reliability or after sales service. Hyundai on the other hand, is a few steps lagging than Maruti in terms of reliability. The after sales service is trustworthy in both the brands. The maintenance charges are very feeble and fits your budget.

Resale & Cost of Ownership:
Since the Ignis and the Grand i10 are new launches, the resale value is not very obvious. But in an average, both the cars can make a fair deal in the resale market. After a few years, there would still be customers looking for second handed compact hatchbacks. Ignis being a make of Suzuki can attract more customers than Hyundai Grand i10.

Resale after 5 - 6 years est.:
Petrol:
Grand i10 1.2 Asta: 4 lakhs
Ignis 1.2  Alpha: 4.5 lakhs

Diesel:
Grand i10 1.2 Asta: 5.5 lakhs
Ignis 1.3 Alpha: 6 lakhs

Total Cost of Ownership (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost - Resale Value) est.:
Petrol:
Grand i10: 5.9 lakhs
Ignis: 5.6 lakhs

Diesel:
Grand i10: 4.6 lakhs
Ignis: 4.6 lakhs

Verdict:
The Ignis and the Grand i10 are equally powered cars and it puts us under great confusion deciding which is best. They make a very small difference in every segment. The Grand i10 has a few extra features than the Ignis. There are more chances for the Grand i10 to be liked by people of all ages unlike the Ignis which seems to be designed exclusively for youngsters. Grand i10 being a facelift of its predecessor, is very familiar and people who have owned the old model of it might look forward to buy the new one.

But its not very certain in the case of Ignis. It is definitely going to turn heads towards it when it runs on road. However, it's a whole new launch from Maruti Suzuki and people might hesitate a tiny bit to count and invest on it. It's upto the customer's personal wish when it comes to "What to buy?". But comparitively, Grand i10 is a better choice than the Ignis.
