Volkswagen Vento vs Skoda Rapid Comparison Review:

"Neither Skoda nor Volkswagen have a good reputation for After Sales Service in the country. However, having learned its lessons the hard way with the Skoda brand, VW group has tried a bit harder with its more premium brand with lukewarm success. Of course it can differ from city to city, but overall, service at VW dealerships is marginally better than that at Skoda's"

Performance & Drivability Comparison:
Petrol:
Both manuals share the 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It is reasonably refined, has a decent mid-range but struggles a bit in terms of low-end torque. VW group has equipped the automatic versions of their Vento & Rapid, with different engines. The Vento gets the fantastic 1.2 litre TSI mill from the Polo GT coupled to a DSG gearbox, while the Rapid makes do with a 1.5 litre mill from the manual version coupled to a conventional torque-convertor unit. The Rapid AT is no match to the Vento, in terms of smoothness, shift speed or efficiency. Although dual-clutch gearboxes from Volkswagen, have become notorious for early failures and expensive replacement costs in our market.

Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Vento 1.5 - 92, Vento 1.2 - 89, Rapid – 92
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Vento - 134, Vento 1.2 - 148, Rapid – 135

Power (PS@rpm): Vento 1.5 – 105@6000, Vento 1.2 - 105@5000, Rapid – 105@5250
Torque (Nm@rpm): Vento 1.5 – 153@3800, Vento 1.2 - 175@1500-4100, Rapid – 153@3800
Kerb Weight (kg): Vento 1.5 - 1145, Vento 1.2 - 1179, Rapid – 1137

Diesel:
Both cars are powered by the fantastic 1.5 litre powertrain, which has one of the most potent mid-range in its class. However, in its latest 110PS state of tune, it has developed some turbo-lag, that makes it a handful to drive around town. Both diesel cars are being offered with a 7-speed DSG transmission, which is fantastic to drive, but a bit of a risky proposition to own.

Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Vento - 90, Rapid – 91
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Vento - 206, Rapid – 207

Power (PS@rpm): Vento – 110@4000, Rapid – 110@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Vento – 250@1500-3000, Rapid – 250@1500-2500
Kerb Weight (kg): Vento - 1216, Rapid – 1210

Handling & Ride Quality Comparison:
Both cars share the exact same underpinnings, so if you keep the tiniest of nit-pickings aside, they feel absolutely identical to drive. There is a typical European feel to their dynamics, with a stiff low-speed ride coupled to fantastic handling manners and a precise and well-weighted steering setup.

Ground Clearance (mm): Vento – 163, Rapid - 163

Wheelbase (mm): Vento – 2553, Rapid - 2552

Tyre Size:
Vento: 175/70R14 (Trendline), 185/60R15 (Comfortline & Highline)
Rapid: 185/60R15

Space & Comfort Comparison:
Both cars are indistinguishable on the inside, with a sturdy and luxurious interior. However, space in the rear is fairly limited, especially if you intend to squeeze three full-size adults in there. The high waistline makes matters worse, making it feel more claustrophobic than it actually is.

Boot-space (lit): Vento - 494, Rapid - 460

Length (mm): Vento – 4390, Rapid - 4413
Width (mm): Vento – 1699, Rapid - 1699
Height (mm): Vento – 1467, Rapid - 1466

Reliability & After Sales Service Comparison:
Neither Skoda nor Volkswagen have a good reputation for After Sales Service in the country. However, having learned its lessons the hard way with the Skoda brand, VW group has tried a bit harder with its more premium brand with lukewarm success. Of course it can differ from city to city, but overall, service at VW dealerships is marginally better than that at Skoda's.

Resale & Cost of Ownership Comparison:
One one hand there's the Vento, which more sought after in the used car market due to the VW logo pasted on its grille, while on the other hand there's the Rapid which has just received a facelift, transforming it into a mini octavia, from a Fabia with a dicky. Since the Vento is sure to receive a facelift shortly, the current one will drop in value considerably within a year.

Overall though, both cars work out to be more or less similar in terms of their Overall Ownership Costs over a usage of 5-7 years.

Resale Value (after usage of 5 to 7 years)
Petrol - Manual:
Rapid Style - 4.50 Lakh
Vento Highline - 4.25 Lakh

Petrol - Automatic:
Rapid Style AT - 4.25 Lakh
Vento Highline - 4.00 Lakh

Diesel - Manual:
Rapid Style AT - 4.50 Lakh
Vento Highline - 4.25 Lakh

Diesel - Automatic:
Rapid Style AT - 4.25 Lakh
Vento Highline - 4.00 Lakh

Total Cost of Ownership (Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
Petrol - Manual:
Rapid Style - 12.35 Lakh
Vento Highline - 11.50 Lakh

Petrol - Automatic:
Rapid Style AT - 13.90 Lakh
Vento Highline - 13.05 Lakh

Diesel - Manual:
Rapid Style AT - 12.10 Lakh
Vento Highline - 12.10 Lakh

Diesel - Automatic:
Rapid Style AT - 13.65 Lakh
Vento Highline - 13.65 Lakh

Verdict:
Both the Vento and the Rapid are basically identical twins, wearing different set of clothes. The Vento is soon about to be updated with some extra gadgetry like LED lamps and and even newer set of clothes. It all boils down to individual choice. However, Volkswagen's dealerships are in much better shape today, with the Polo & Ameo taking care of their bread & butter, whereas Skoda dealerships are in complete doldrums. We have no choice but to declare the Vento as the winner of this shootout as it remains the safer option amongst the two.
