Maruti Suzuki Ciaz vs Skoda Rapid Comparison Review:

"When it comes to the diesels, the Rapid is in a different league altogether compared to the Ciaz. It has remarkable mid-range grunt, compared to the Ciaz as well as better drivability at lower-revs. Its only disadvantage is a slight lack of refinement compared to the Fiat’s Multijet engine powered Ciaz"

Performance & Drivability Comparison:
Petrol:
The Skoda Rapid Petrol, has a miniscule advantage over the Ciaz in terms of performance, with a marginally stronger mid-range. However, its shortfall in terms of efficiency compared to the Ciaz is way more of a disadvantage. Overall, both engines are reasonably refined, albeit a little weak on low-end torque.

Handling & Ride Quality Comparison:
The Ciaz has well balanced ride-handling with a bit of a bias towards ride quality, with neutral handling. The Rapid though is typically European in terms of its handling manners. It has outstanding mechanical grip, and rock steady high speed behavior coupled to a slightly stiff ride at low speeds, which goes on getting better and better as the speeds rise.

Rapid: 185/60R15

Space & Comfort Comparison:
Suzuki has carved out insane amounts of room inside the cabin, compared to the Skoda. The Rapid feels a bit tight and claustrophobic, especially if try to squeeze in five passengers. The Ciaz has acres of room, especially the rear knee-room and leg-room, which can rival that of some limos. Ciaz’s boot-space is also tiny bit bigger than the Rapid’s.

Boot-space (lit): Ciaz - 510, Rapid - 460

Length (mm): Ciaz – 4490, Rapid - 4413

Height (mm): Ciaz – 1485, Rapid - 1466

Reliability & After Sales Service Comparison:
Maruti is the unchallenged leader of Customer Service in our country. Skoda on the other hand has acquired a terrible reputation for the same. The main culprit is nobody but Skoda’s Indian executives who have squandered the hard-work of their parent organization, that is known to top JD Power studies in Europe. But in India, Skoda’s politico-mafia owned dealerships coupled with careless employees have destroyed, what could have been a big headache for the established players in the market.

Resale & Cost of Ownership Comparison:
The Ciaz is bound to depreciate considerably lesser than the Rapid over a usage of 5 to 7 years. Overall, Ciaz works out to be a jaw-dropping 2.5 Lakh rupees cheaper than an equivalent Rapid in the long run.

Petrol - Manual:
Rapid Style - 4.50 Lakh
Ciaz ZXi+ RS - 4.25 Lakh

Petrol - Automatic:
Rapid Style - 4.25 Lakh
Ciaz ZXi+ AT - 4.00 Lakh

Rapid Style - 12.65 Lakh
Ciaz ZXi+ RS - 9.95 Lakh

Petrol - Automatic:
Rapid Style - 14.25 Lakh
Ciaz ZXi+ AT - 12.10 Lakh

Diesel - Manual:
Rapid Style - 12.25 Lakh
Ciaz ZXi+ RS - 8.65 Lakh

Diesel - Automatic:
Rapid Style - 13.80 Lakh

Verdict:
Undoubtedly, the Ciaz is an incredibly better value-for-money option than the Rapid, it is cheaper, more efficient and has more or less same number of features as the Rapid. It is also less of a headache than the Rapid to service and repair. Technically the Rapid is a superior automobile than the Ciaz, thanks to better performance, drivability and dynamics than the Ciaz. But then Ciaz’s cavernous cabin and better suitability to Indian road conditions makes it the clear winner of this test.
