Redi Go vs Tiago Video Comparison Review:

Common Features: AC, Power Steering, Front Power Windows, Central Locking, Tilt Steering

Extra Features in Tiago (XM): Rear Power Windows
Extra Features in Redi Go (S): Driver Airbag, Stereo: FM, USB, Aux + 2 Speakers, LED DRLs

Performance & Drivability:
Tiago’s 400 cc advantage in engine displacement over the Redi Go is effectively nullified by its almost 400 kg penalty in kerb weight, resulting in identical power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios. Both cars have more or less similar performance as well as drivability around town. Both cars are powered by three-pot mills making them a bit deficient in terms of refinement, compared to their 4-cylinder engined competitors.

However, we have a wild card in this comparison, which is the Tiago diesel. It doesn’t have the outright acceleration of the petrol cars, but it has much better drivability around town, making it much easier to drive than the petrols on city commutes. It is also a fairly silent unit and you won’t feel much difference in refinement compared to the petrols.

Power (PS@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) – 85@6000, Redi Go (Petrol) – 54@5678, Tiago (Diesel) – 70@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) - 114@3500, Redi Go (Petrol) - 72@4386, Tiago (Diesel) - 140@1800-3000
Kerb Weight (kg): Tiago (Petrol) – 1012, Redi Go (Petrol) – 635, Tiago (Diesel) – 1080

Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 84, Redi Go (Petrol) – 85, Tiago (Diesel) – 65
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 113, Redi Go (Petrol) – 113, Tiago (Diesel) – 130

Fuel Efficiency:
In our real world tests, the Redi Go was almost 3 kmpl more efficient than the Tiago petrol, but the Tiago diesel was consistently 2 kmpl more efficient than the Redi Go. This means the Redi Go will cost 55,000 Rs. lesser than the Tiago petrol and 65,000 Rs, more than the Tiago diesel in fuel costs over a usage of 75,000 kms.

ARAI Mileage (kmpl):
Tiago (petrol, manual) – 23.84 (difference 1.3), Redi Go (petrol, manual) – 25.17, Tiago (diesel, manual) – 27.28 (difference 2.1)

Fuel Cost for 75,000 km (in Lakh):
Tiago (petrol, manual) – 3.45, Redi Go (petrol, manual) – 2.90, Tiago (diesel, manual) – 2.25

Space & Comfort:
In spite of being significantly bigger, the Tiago does not have much advantage over the Redi Go in terms of interior space and comfort. Tiago’s rear seat has better legroom and slightly more width than the Redi Go. But the Redi Go, has a higher hip point, resulting in better under thigh support and easier ingress-egress. Although, it doesn’t have the width to seat more than two people in the rear, while it is possible, though not comfortable to seat three passengers in the Tiago. Tiago’s 242 litre boot is also hardly any bigger than Redi Go’s 222 litre boot volume. Tiago’s interior ambience though is leagues ahead of the Redi Go’s rather dated innards. However, Tiago’s interior trims feel fragile, while Redi Go’s interiors are built to sustain decades of abuse.

Length (mm): Tiago – 3746, Redi Go – 3430
Width (mm): Tiago – 1647, Redi Go – 1560
Height (mm): Tiago – 1535, Redi Go – 1541

Ride Quality & Handling:
The Redi Go is no match to the sheer dynamic prowess of the Tiago. Tiago absorbs bumps and ruts much better than the Redi Go, which rides like a car literally two segments lower than the Tiago. Redi Go’s higher ground clearance does not make it even half as comfortable as the Tiago while riding over the lunar landscape of Indian roads. Tiago also has better stability at high speeds as well as under panic braking compared to the Redi Go. The absence of ABS in the Redi Go, even as an option is a glaring omission. Tiago’s handling is also leagues ahead of the Redi Go, it has a keen turn-in and a well-weighted steering setup against the overly light and listless steering of the Redi Go.

Ground Clearance (mm): Tiago – 170, Redi Go – 185

Tyre Size:
Tiago – 155/80R13 (XB/XB/XM), 175/65R14 (XT/XZ)
Redi Go - 155/70R13

Reliability and After Sales Service:
Datsun’s products has proven to be a much more reliable than all of Tata’s launches till date. Therefore Redi Go is bound to be much more reliable than the Tiago and cause far lesser unscheduled visits to the service station over an ownership period of 5 to 7 years. Datsun-Nissan service operations are also in their learning phase and still not up to the expected ‘Japanese’ levels of dependability. But still, it is better than Tata’s service network which continues to treat all of their customers like Taxi-cab drivers.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh):
Thanks to better reliability, Datsun Redi Go is bound to depreciate slightly lesser than the Tiago Petrol. However, thanks to fantastic fuel efficiency, the diesel Tiago will depreciate just as much if not lesser than the Redi Go.
Tiago XM (Petrol manual) – 2.15
Redi Go S (Petrol, manual) – 2.00
Tiago XM (Diesel manual) – 2.80

Total Cost of Ownership (in Lakh): (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
Overall, the Redi Go S works out to be 85,000 Rs. cheaper than the petrol powered Tiago XM. However, the Tiago XM diesel works out to be exactly as cheap as the Redi Go in terms of Overall Ownership Costs.
Tiago XM (Petrol manual) – 5.50
Redi Go S (Petrol manual) – 4.65
Tiago XM (Diesel manual) – 4.65

The Tiago petrol loses out to the Redi Go by a small margin. Burning fuel in a 400cc larger engine to power a 400 kg heavier car is a ridiculously wasteful way of transportation, resulting in 85,000 Rs. higher Ownership Costs of the Tiago petrol in comparison to the Redi Go. Redi Go’s intelligent weight saving gives it equivalent performance to the Tiago, but at the same time goes 3 kilometers further on a litre of petrol, and, as we have seen from the epic fail, of the 1800 kg Scorpio, in the Global NCAP crash test, tons of steel does not a safe car make. So let’s reserve the verdict on safety of both cars until they prove their mettle in NCAP tests. The Redi Go is also more feature packed, just as practical and is bound to be far more reliable than the Tiago.

However, the Redi Go loses out to the dark horse of this test, the Tiago diesel. Whatever the Redi Go does, the Tiago diesel does better. It is even more efficient than the Redi Go and it sips on the cheaper variety of fuel, resulting in savings of almost a rupee per kilometer. It has better drivability and requires less frequent gearshifts than the Redi Go. It has a more comfortable ride as well better handling than the Redi Go. It may not have the cheap audio system and cheerful DRLs, but you can always get far better ones for the Tiago in the accessory market. It does not have a driver’s airbag but provides the option of a complete safety pack with ABS, 2 Airbags and Height adjustable driver’s seat at an added price of just 35,000 Rs. Not to forget Tiago’s well-appointed interiors, that can shame those of far expensive cars like for example the Etios. In our humble opinion, the diesel Tiago convincingly beats the Redi Go in this comparison.
