Tiago vs Kwid Comparison

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Comparison

Overall, the diesel Tiago is by far our pick of this test. Firstly it is just as affordable as the Kwid, has similar features, and has superior drivability and dynamics as well as incredibly sweet sound quality from its Harman branded audio system. In comparison the petrol Tiago & Kwid fall short in two crucial parameters viz. weak low-end torque and high fuel outlay. How we wish that the diesel Tiago was offered with the option of an AMT gearbox!

Pricing & Features:
The top-of-the-line Kwid ‘RXT O' variant, retails for 3.95 Lakh (On road, Delhi), which is without doubt one of the most trending hatchbacks in the country today. But, thanks to jaw dropping pricing of the Tata Tiago the Kwid suddenly has a tough competitor on its radar. The penultimate Tiago petrol 'XT' variant costs 4.60 Lakh, which is 60,000 Rs. more than the equivalent Kwid. Both cars have couple of extra features that are absent in the other car, as detailed below. (Tiago diesel 'XT' costs 5.51 Lakh on road, Delhi)

Common Features: AC, Power Steering, Front Power Windows, Central Locking, Keyless Entry, Stereo: FM, USB, Aux, Bluetooth + Front Speakers, Fog Lamps
Extra Features in Tiago (XT): Parking Sensors, Electrically Adjustable Mirrors, Rear Speakers,
Extra Features Kwid (RXT O): Driver Airbag, 7” Touchscreen, On-board Navigation

Performance & Drivability:
Kwid has a 400cc smaller engine than the Tiago, but then it weighs a crazy 420 kg lesser than the Tiago petrol! That makes both cars almost equal in terms of power and torque to weight. However, the Kwid is quite weak in terms of low-end torque, and suffers in terms of drivability around town, compared to the Tiago, especially with a couple of passengers on board. That being said, Renault's little 800cc engine is much more refined than the Tiago’s petrol mill, which sounds especially harsh at higher revs. But even better than both the petrols, is Tiago’s diesel mill, which has much better drivability at low revs as well as a much more potent mid-range to help while overtaking.

Power (PS@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) – 85@6000, Kwid (Petrol) – 54@5678, Tiago (Diesel) – 70@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) - 114@3500, Kwid (Petrol) – 72@4386, Tiago (Diesel) – 140@1800-3000
Kerb Weight (kg): Tiago (Petrol) – 1080, Kwid (Petrol) – 660, Tiago (Diesel) – 1080
Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 79, Kwid (Petrol) – 82, Tiago (Diesel) – 65
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 106, Kwid (Petrol) – 109, Tiago (Diesel) – 130

Fuel Efficiency:
In our real world tests, the Kwid was over two kmpl more efficient than the petrol Tiago, but was almost 2 kmpl less efficient than the Tiago diesel.

ARAI Mileage (kmpl): Tiago (petrol) –23.84, Kwid (manual) – 25.17, Tiago (diesel) –27.28
Fuel Cost for 75,000 km (in Lakh): Tiago (petrol) - 3.13, Kwid (manual) – 2.96, Tiago (diesel) - 2.25

Space & Comfort:
The Tiago is marginally larger on the outside, but the cabin space inside both the cars is almost identical. There is enough room for four adults with some space left over for an occasional fifth occupant. Surprisingly the Kwid has a noticeably larger 300 liter boot compared to 242 liter boot-space inside the Tiago. However, the Tiago’s interiors feels more premium and well-appointed compared to the expanse of grey plastics inside the Kwid.

Length (mm): Tiago – 3746, Kwid – 3679
Width (mm): Tiago – 1647, Kwid – 1579
Height (mm): Tiago – 1535, Kwid – 1478

Ride Quality & Handling:
The Tiago has a tad better ride as well as keener handling compared to the Kwid. The Kwid has a common steering ratio for both power-steered and manual steered version with a lock-to-lock ratio 4.0 turns. The Kwid requires too much shuffling of hands during U-turns. Overall too, the Tiago feels more enthusiastic and responsive around corners. Tiago also handles the rough roads a tad bit better than the Kwid, though the Kwid itself has outstanding ride quality considering its tiny footprint. Both cars exhibit better than expected stability at high speeds.

Ground Clearance (mm): Tiago – 170, Kwid – 180
Tyre Size: Tiago – 175/65R14, Kwid - 155/80R13

Reliability and After Sales Service:
Neither Tata nor Renault has managed to deliver peace of mind to its customers in India though their Service Support. However, Renault’s Nissan sourced platforms have at least proven to be fairly reliably, which cannot be said for any of Tata’s passenger cars. Renault’s growing and Tata’s shrinking service network has similar reach of around 300 to 400 touch points as of today.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh): Kwid is expected to hold slightly better resale value over the Tiago thanks to lesser niggling issues expected to crop up over the next 5 to 7 years.
Tiago XT (Petrol) – 2.35
Kwid RXT O (Petrol) – 2.13
Tiago XT (Diesel) – 2.98

Total Cost of Ownership (in Lakh): (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
The Kwid works out to be around 60,000 Rs. lighter on the pocket in terms of overall cost of ownership compared to the equivalent Tiago. Interestingly though the diesel Tiago works out to be exactly identical in terms of Total Cost of Ownership to the petrol burning Kwid.
Tiago XT (Petrol) – 5.38
Kwid RXT O (Petrol) – 4.78
Tiago XT (Diesel) – 4.78

Verdict:
The diesel Tiago is by far our pick of this test. Firstly it is just as affordable as the Kwid, has similar features, and has superior drivability, better dynamics as well as incredibly sweet sound quality from its Harman branded audio system. In comparison the petrol Tiago & Kwid fall short in two crucial parameters viz. weak low-end torque and high fuel outlay. How we wish that the diesel Tiago was offered with the option of an AMT gearbox!
