Vitara Brezza vs Ertiga Comparison

Maruti-Suzuki Vitara Brezza vs Ertiga Comparison

Overall, as a personal vehicle, the Brezza beats the Ertiga by a small margin to win this test. It is better suited to Indian road conditions than the Ertiga, has more space in the first and second row of seats, has a few extra features and works out to be cheaper than the Ertiga in the long run. We believe it is Maruti-Suzuki's best effort yet, at delivering just what the Indian customers want. If only Maruti had gone that extra mile to offer an AMT (automatic) gearbox at launch, although we are sure that they must be frantically working day-in and day-out to make it happen.

Ertiga vs Vitara Brezza Comparison Video:

Pricing & Features: Ertiga’s top-end diesel variant, the ‘ZDi+’ retails for 10.60 Lakh, On-road, Delhi, which is around 25,000 rupees cheaper than Vitara Brezza’s ‘ZDi+’ variant (costing 10.85 Lakh). However, the Vitara Brezza has more features than the Ertiga (listed below) has, which are worth around 25,000 Rs. This simply means that Brezza has been priced equivalent to the Ertiga, but Maruti has positioned it higher by giving it a higher price tag and adding some extra features simultaneously.

Common Features: ABS, Airbags-2, Power Steering, Central Locking by Remote, Power Windows, Parking Camera, Parking Sensors, Infotainment System with FM, USB, Bluetooth & Aux + 4 Speakers & 2 Tweeters, Touch-screen, Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Steering Wheel Switches, Electrically Adjustable & Folding Mirrors, Height Adjustable Driver’s Seat, Fog Lamps – Front, Alloy Wheels, Rear Wash-Wipe-Defog, Push Button Start & Smart Key

Extra Features in Vitara Brezza (ZDi+): Automatic Climate Control, LED Daytime Running Lights, Projector Headlamps, Automatic Light-sensing Headlamps, Automatic Rain-sensing Wipers, Cruise Control, Anti-Pinch Driver's Window

Extra Features in Ertiga (ZDi+): none

Performance & Drivability (Diesel): The Vitara Brezza has marginally better performance than the Ertiga. However, the difference is not much. The same, Fiat sourced Multijet engine powers both cars, but the Ertiga is a bit heavier and has slightly taller gearing than the Brezza. This makes it more susceptible to turbo-lag while driving in city traffic than the Brezza. The Brezza itself has quite a bit of turbo-lag making it a chore to drive around city traffic. Overtaking ability on the highways and refinement of both cars definitely lives up to customer’s expectations though.

Power (PS@rpm): Vitara Brezza – 90@4000, Ertiga – 90@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Vitara Brezza – 200@1750, Ertiga – 200@2000
Kerb Weight (kg): Vitara Brezza – 1185, Ertiga – 1265
Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Vitara Brezza – 76, Ertiga - 71
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Vitara Brezza – 169, Ertiga – 158

Fuel Efficiency: In our back-to-back tests, the Brezza was around half a kmpl more efficient than the Ertiga, in spite of the absence of the SHVS, hybrid system of the Ertiga.

ARAI Mileage (kmpl): Vitara Brezza – 24.3, Ertiga – 24.52
Fuel Cost for 75,000 km (Lakh): Vitara Brezza – 2.47, Ertiga – 2.45
assuming current fuel prices

Space & Comfort: Ertiga’s six-seat configuration has one major flaw. There is just 135 liters of boot-space left over for carrying luggage in the back. Week-long road trips with six passengers are thus out of question. Folding the rear seats does liberate over 500 liters of boot-pace, but then you would be better off in a Brezza as it is more spacious in the front two rows than the Ertiga. Three full-size adults on the middle row becomes quite cramped in the Ertiga, but in the Brezza there is even a little bit of space left over for an occasional fourth occupant.

Length (mm): Vitara Brezza - 3995, Ertiga - 4265
Width (mm): Vitara Brezza - 1790, Ertiga - 1695
Height (mm): Vitara Brezza - 1640, Ertiga - 1685

Ride Quality & Handling: Neither of the cars are meant to be corner carvers. They have safe and balanced suspension setups. Both cars have decent bump absorption, and are caught out by only the sharpest of the potholes. The Brezza is slightly better suited to Indian road conditions thanks to a higher ground clearance and bigger tyres. Both cars are prone to body roll and have hardly any feel or feedback from the steering. Straight line stability at high speeds as well as under panic braking is quite good in both the cars.

Ground Clearance (mm): Vitara Brezza – 198, Ertiga – 185

Tyre Size:
Vitara Brezza - 215/60R16 (ZDi, ZDi+), 205/60R16 (LDi, VDi)
Ertiga - 185/65R15

Reliability and After Sales Service: Maruti’s unchallenged leadership in providing hassle free service support in India is known to all. Suzuki’s excellent product reliability coupled to Maruti’s network reach of over 2000+ touch points puts it far beyond the reach of all other competitors.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh): The Brezza is bound to have slightly better retained value than the Ertiga, thanks to the overwhelming demand for the compact SUV body style in India.
Vitara Brezza (ZDi+) – 6.51, Ertiga (ZDi+) – 6.05

Total Cost of Ownership (in Lakh): (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
In spite of being slightly more expensive to buy than the Ertiga ZDi+, the Brezza ‘ZDi+’ works out be 20,000 Rs. cheaper in terms of Total Cost of Ownership, thanks to a much better residual value than the Ertiga.
Vitara Brezza (ZDi+) – 6.80, Ertiga (ZDi+) – 7.00

Verdict: As a personal vehicle, the Brezza beats the Ertiga by a small margin to win this test.
