Tiago vs WagonR Comparison

Tata Tiago vs Maruti-Suzuki WagonR Comparison
Overall, the diesel Tiago dominates this test to claim the top spot in this test. Compared to the petrol WagonR it will save almost a lakh rupees in fuel cost alone over its lifetime. Tiago also has a few extra features, better drivability compared to the manual WagonR, immensely superior dynamics, spacious interiors and last but not least it is a much more stable and safer vehicle than the WagonR. Compared to the petrol Tiago, the oil-burner is easier to drive around town and lighter on the pocket to refuel. We only wish that Tata made one with a potent diesel-AMT combination.

Pricing & Features: The top-of-the-line WagonR ‘VXi ABS' variant, retails for 5.10 Lakh (On road, Delhi), which is without doubt one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country. But now there's a new player in the segment, the Tata Tiago. The top-of-the-line Tiago petrol 'XZ' variant costing 5.20 Lakh, which is 10,000 Rs. more than the equivalent WagonR. However, the Tiago has many more extra features over the WagonR, as detailed below, which are worth at least 40,000 Rs. making it 30,000 Rs. cheaper than an equivalent WagonR. (WagonR VXi AMT ABS Petrol costs 5.66 lakh and Tiago diesel 'XZ' costs 6.12 Lakh on road, Delhi)

Common Features: ABS, Airbags - 2, AC, Power Steering, Power Windows, Central Locking, Keyless entry, Stereo: FM, USB, Aux + 4 Speakers, Rear Wash-Wipe-Defog, Electrically Adjustable Mirrors, Fog Lamps - Front, Tilt Steering
Extra Features in Tiago (XZ): Parking Sensors, 4 Tweeters, Bluetooth, Steering Wheel Switches, Driver's Seat Height Adjust, Alloy Wheels
Extra Features in WagonR (VXi): none

Performance & Drivability:
WagonR's K10 engine is much more refined and eager to rev compared to the Tiago's new non-turbocharged Revotron unit. Both cars are evenly matched in terms of outright performance as well as drivability around town. However, WagonR holds another trump card over the Tiago i.e. the fantastic AMT automatic gearbox which eliminates the fatigue of endless city commutes. Tata has promised to AMTise the Tiago in the next six months.
Power (PS@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) – 85@6000, WagonR (Petrol) – 68@6200, Tiago (Diesel) – 70@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Tiago (Petrol) - 114@3500, WagonR (Petrol) – 90@3500, Tiago (Diesel) – 140@1800-3000
Kerb Weight (kg): Tiago (Petrol) – 1080, WagonR (Petrol) – 875, Tiago (Diesel) – 1080
Power to Weight Ratio (PS/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 79, WagonR (Petrol) – 78, Tiago (Diesel) – 65
Torque to Weight Ratio (Nm/ton): Tiago (Petrol) – 106, WagonR (Petrol) – 103, Tiago (Diesel) – 130

Fuel Efficiency:
In our real world tests, the WagonR (both manual & automatic) was consistently one kmpl more efficient than the Tiago petrol. The diesel Tiago was almost three kmpl more efficient than the petrol WagonR.

ARAI Mileage (kmpl): Tiago (petrol, manual) –23.84, WagonR (manual & auto, petrol) – 20.5, Tiago (diesel, manual) –27.28
Fuel Cost for 75,000 km (in Lakh): Tiago (petrol, manual) - 3.13, WagonR (manual & auto, petrol) – 3.63, Tiago (diesel, manual) - 2.25

Space & Comfort:
Tiago has much more room inside the cabin as well as the boot. Unlike the WagonR which is a strict four seater, the Tiago can accommodate a fifth passenger, occasionally. Tiago’s 242 litres of boot-space is also far more capacious than the pathetically small 180 litre boot of the WagonR. Tiago's interiors feel more luxurious than the WagonR, but the WagonR's interior feels more durable.

Length (mm): Tiago – 3746, WagonR – 3539
Width (mm): Tiago – 1647, WagonR – 1495
Height (mm): Tiago – 1535, WagonR – 1670

Ride Quality & Handling: The Tiago has outstanding dynamics compared to the WagonR, which has one of the worst dynamics in the market. The Tiago soaks up bumps and ruts far better than the WagonR. The ride quality for WagonR's rear seat passengers is nothing less than a punishment. The WagonR fares even worse at cornering. It suffers from too much body roll and a numb, over-assisted steering which combine to make it one of the most unsafe cars to pilot around the bends. Tiago on the other hand has a responsive chassis and quick, precise steering making it quite fun to throw around corners. Stability at highway speeds and under panic braking situations is also much better in the Tiago compared to the downright scary high speed behaviour of the WagonR.

Ground Clearance (mm): Tiago – 170, WagonR – 165
Tyre Size: Tiago – 175/65R14, WagonR - 155/65R14 (VXi), 145/80R13 (LXi)

Reliability and After Sales Service:
Tata needs a massive turnaround of its dealership operations to get back in the game. Product reliability also needs to be improved significantly to meet the increased expectations of the new age customer. Maruti on the other hand reigns supreme as the unchallenged leader of hassle free ownership experience, along with an unimaginable lead in service coverage with its 2000+ dealerships compared to Tata's dwindling network of 400 odd surviving touch points.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh):
WagonR is bound to depreciate much lesser than the Tiago, thanks to Maruti's stellar reputation for reliability and longevity of its cars.
Tiago (Petrol manual) – 2.65, WagonR (Petrol automatic) – 3.22, WagonR (Petrol manual) – 2.90, Tiago (Diesel manual) – 3.30

Total Cost of Ownership (in Lakh): (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
In spite of a resale price disadvantage, the Tiago petrol works out to be slightly cheaper than the WagonR (manual) in terms of Total Cost of Ownership. Interestingly, the diesel Tiago will save its customer a whopping 75,000 Rs. compared to the equivalent WagonR petrol.
Tiago (Petrol manual) – 5.67, WagonR (Petrol automatic) – 6.07, WagonR (Petrol manual) – 5.83, Tiago (Diesel manual) – 5.06

Verdict:
The diesel Tiago dominates this test to claim the top spot in this comparo. We only wish that Tata made one with a potent diesel-AMT combination.
